HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The first floor of the Douglass Centre, once Huntington’s Frederick Douglass High School, recently saw something it has not seen in a very long time: students.
Ebenezer Medical Outreach hosted a free sports physical clinic for the community on Thursday June 27. Thirty-five student athletes completed their required physicals through the generosity of volunteer physicians from Marshall Family Medicine and the passion of two local students.
Typically, Ebenezer serves adults who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicaid. Yet, there were two very compelling reasons to host this event. Their names are Tristan Hornbuckle and Tayveon Wilson.
Hornbuckle and Wilson, rising seniors at Huntington High School, developed Get Smart on Sports as their senior passion project. An important part of their project was ensuring students in Fairfield had the opportunity to play sports.
Hornbuckle and Wilson wanted to prevent the sports physical, intended to allow students to engage in sports safely, from becoming a barrier to participating. They envisioned offering the physicals in a place that could be easily accessed by local families – and offering them for free.
That is where Ebenezer came in. With a nearly 40-year history of serving Fairfield, Huntington’s free and charitable clinic proved to be the perfect location to bring Hornbuckle and Wilson’s vision to life. The generous support of Ebenezer’s frequent partners at Marshall Family Medicine enabled the event to quickly come together and become a big success.
Before any athletes take the field, Fairfield already has a win to celebrate.
