Go Red for Women

February 3, 2024

It was standing room only in the fellowship hall of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church during the “Go Red for Women” event on Friday February 2. Hosted by the Huntington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the evening included a stunning fashion show, exciting door prizes, and a delicious heart healthy meal.

The evening’s keynote address was provided by Dr. Telly Meadows, a Huntington native and an accomplished interventional cardiologist currently practicing at Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute in Salisbury, NC.  His extensive education included training at Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, and Cleveland Clinic.

Many members of the Meadows family were in attendance as Dr. Meadows delivered a powerful speech on the importance of heart health. He highlighted the exceptionally high risk faced by African Americans and women, especially.

Representatives from Marshall Health and Ebenezer Medical Outreach, Inc. were on hand to provide educational materials and blood pressure screenings. While many attendees reported already seeing a doctor and taking blood pressure medication, Ebenezer found that 88% of those they screened still had high or elevated blood pressure.

Dr. Meadows urged the audience to fight back against this silent killer, noting the community doesn’t give up in the face of adversity. Quitting smoking, eating healthy, exercising, and finding a doctor who really cares were all important steps Dr. Meadows emphasized.
