Volunteer FAQ

What commitment is required of volunteers?

Volunteer consistency is critical to run effective clinics. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of once a month. Exceptions are made for busy health care providers (i.e., doctors, dentists, pharmacists), and we ask for these volunteers to serve a minimum of one shift per quarter. A typical shift lasts between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the position.

How long will it take to process my application?

To match volunteers’ skills and interests with the clinic positions, potential volunteers must go through a screening process. Please allow up to two weeks for processing after submitting your application. At that point, you will receive a phone call to either arrange an interview with either the volunteer coordinator or the appropriate personnel. If your desired position isn’t immediately available, you can be placed on a wait list.

Is there a dress code for volunteers?

The dress code is casual professional. Scrubs are acceptable and help to present a professional image, but you are welcome to dress comfortably within limits. Please restrict the use of strong perfumes or scents, as some patients have sensitivities to them. We ask that all volunteers wear closed-toe shoes for their safety.

Will I be able to shadow a current volunteer?

Yes, but it is strictly dependent on the availability and the schedule of the volunteers of specific positions. The volunteer office will work with you to schedule a “shadow shift” so you can observe a volunteer in the role that you are applying for.

Can I volunteer on evenings or weekends?

No. Our clinic is not open in evenings or on weekends. Check our services schedule for more information.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Regularly, the minimum age is 18 years old to volunteer. However, volunteers under age 18 can apply with a guardian for special projects that may be available; please e-mail our volunteer services for more information at emo@emohealth.org.

Do you accept medical, pharmacy, nursing, or physician assistant students?

Yes, on a case-by-case basis. Please consult with the program coordinator at your school to contact our medical director for volunteer or rotation opportunities.

Does the Free Clinic accommodate large groups of volunteers?

No, unfortunately we cannot accommodate large groups, but we will consider special projects on a case-by-case basis. Please send us an e-mail at emo@emohealth.org to inquire about opportunities.
