HUNTINGTON, WV – There was record breaking attendance at Ebenezer Medical Outreach’s Annual Eye Clinic.
On Thursday August 22, a total of 107 patients were seen at Huntington’s free and charitable clinic, located on the first floor of Fairfield’s Douglass Centre. A vision exam, as well as a diabetic eye exam, were offered at no cost to patients. The effort was made possible through the Appalachian Vision Outreach Program of the WVU Eye Institute.
In addition to the free exams, new pairs of prescription glasses were ordered by 82 patients for a contribution of $20 to $40, significantly less than the glasses could otherwise be available – and even less than they cost to make.
Still, there was help for those for whom that contribution was challenging.
Volunteers from the Lions Club of Southeast Huntington were on hand to help the clinic run smoothly. The community organization, long known for its work putting kindness in action, assisted 29 patients with making the contribution for ordering their prescription glasses.
The benefits of the clinic do not end with the exams and glasses. More serious issues, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, were identified for three patients. Ebenezer is now assisting with the needed referrals to ensure these patients receive the appropriate follow up care.
Ebenezer currently offers this Eye Clinic once a year. It is made possible through grant support awarded to the Appalachian Vision Outreach Program.
